Flats in Merchant City are popular to rent because of the area's close proximity to Glasgow's City Centre and the area's busy 'Covent Garden' atmosphere. The area is bordered by the M8 motorway, the Clyde River and the district of Dennistoun.
For most of Merchant City’s history, it was referred to as ‘Trongate’, or a variety of other names that were not Merchant City. The name was instead given to the area when it was rejuvenated in the 1980s.
Merchant City is filled with independent and designer fashion shops, popular bars, bistros and restaurants. Its proximity to train, bus and underground transport links makes Merchant City a great location in which to choose to live, whether you're a student looking to rent short term or a professional looking for a longer rental lease. Those attending the University of Glasgow, though, may find areas around Hyndland closer to campus.
The area was given the Academy of Urbanism’s ‘Great Neighbourhood Award’ in 2006 – a reflection of how high Merchant City has risen as a residential district in recent years.
Properties in Merchant City vary between traditional town houses and impressive new developments, many of which incorporate original Victorian buildings. There are several standout buildings in the area with architectural or historical significance, a feature that Merchant City shares with several disctricts throughout Glasgow. Govanhill in the south, for instance, contains the famous Govanhill Baths and one of the original Carnegie libraries.
As the location of the University of Strathclyde’s main campus and the heart of Glasgow’s city centre, Merchant City is a great place for student accommodation if you’re looking to be close to the action. Finding student property there may seem like a tough task, as shops and cafes are more prevalent in the area than flats – but student flats are actually fairly common in Merchant City and it remains a popular destination for student lets.
If you’re looking for a quiet place to get on with your studies, however, it might not be the best choice as Merchant City remains one of the busiest areas of Glasgow.
