During the 19th and early 20th century, Barrhead was a major centre for manufacturing, with industries including an iron foundry, tannery, and the Armitage Shanks porcelain ware works, as well as Gaskell's carpet factory. Those industries were crucial to the local economy employing the town's residents. With the decline and closure of nearly all of these industries in the late 20th century caused a fall in local population and employment. However, today Barrhead has found new life as a popular residential town with many local amenities, schools and excellent health care.
