During the 18th century and early 19th century coal mining was at the heart of industry in Johnstone. Working in the mines was very dangerous, however, with fires breaking out and they were often flooded. Sadly in 1860 there was a disaster at the Benston Pit where five miners were killed. The pits were subsequently closed down with mining in the Johnstone area ceased.
