Robert Gordon University cannot match its Granite City rival in terms of age, but has instead embraced its youth to become one of the top ‘modern’ universities in the UK. Now it has several accolades as a modern establishment that focuses on professional degrees and getting students useful qualifications. The university is centred on its Garthdee campus which is located in the South West of Aberdeen by the River Dee, far from the University of Aberdeen in the North. There is also a campus in the centre of the city, however, as well as student halls and a union.
The Garthdee campus was a Greenfield site and Manor estate until the 1950s, and there are several clues of its history scattered throughout. It features several modern buildings as a result of the university’s investment in the campus, which has evolved to become the main site for Robert Gordon very recently. The mix of new and old make it an interesting and varied place to study, with state of the art facilities in an attractive area.
Rosemount is a popular area for student lets around Robert Gordon because of its proximity to the city centre campus, which can be attractive to those that want to live closer to Union Street. Both areas are full of friendly students and amenities though, so picking between them is a simple decision of what suits you. There are also several people that prefer to live in student lets located in the more northerly Old Town, home to the majority of the University of Aberdeen’s students. Whilst it offers a good atmosphere and is very student friendly, those looking to move up to the Old Town should be wary of its distance from Robert Gordon’s main Garthdee campus.
