Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, famed for its high levels of culture and learning. As such, it shouldn’t be too surprising that it is home to several universities – but the University of Edinburgh is probably its best known and definitely its most venerable. Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is one of the Great Britain’s six oldest universities (albeit the newest one).
The institution has been a regular at the top of Europe’s universities for a long time, and has a history of being a top intellectual hub. Many of the Enlightment’s key thinkers were Edinburgh alumni, earning the city the nickname of the Athens of the North. A strong influence on modern medicine also cements this university’s reputation as a key influence on western life.
Like Oxford, Cambridge and Aberdeen, the University of Edinburgh’s campus plays a major part in Edinburgh’s Old Town architecture and culture. Most student accommodation is nearby in Newington, Morningside or the ever-popular Marchmont. Morningside and Sciennes both offer a comfortable, well-off suburban feel that fits Edinburgh’s atmosphere and a large choice of student property; Newington is more alternative and modern with several interesting bars and restaurants around Nicholson and Clerk Street. The festival also sees much of its activity play out around this part of town, so it’s a great place to stay over summer if your student let extends into August.
